Discover 8 Ways to Reduce Your Anxiety + Improve Your Health

For those of us struggling with anxiety or who know people struggling with it, it is important to, first, realize that it IS a real illness that affects: the body, thoughts, and behaviors. It is NOT: just stressing out, being a "neat freak", being excitable, having feelings of anticipation, an excuse to get attention, being a nervous person, unreasonable fears, being shy, a choice, a sign of weakness, a character flaw. It is real. Some of the most common types of anxiety disorders include: Panic disorder, OCD, PTSD, phobias, general anxiety, and social anxiety.

What can we do?

  • Call someone you trust. Let them know that you're struggling at the moment and that you need their support.

  • Do something physical: Go to the gym and get a good workout in, take a brisk walk, yoga.

  • Distract yourself. Try an adult coloring book, doodle, knit. These activities have a calming effect.

  • Go somewhere safe and quiet. Challenge yourself to have a full-blown anxiety attack. This may sounds nutty, but a lot of people feel that when they challenge themselves to do that, it actually has the opposite effect.

  • Deep breathing. Try belly breathing, paying attention to the rise and fall of your stomach.

  • Write it down. Getting thoughts out of your head and onto paper can be very helpful. This can be as little as writing a to-do list.

  • Focus on things you CAN control and take action. Maybe try planning your meals for the week or organizing your home.

  • FIND HELP NEAR YOU.
