I Want to Get in Shape, But I Don’t Know Where to Start

You know you need to make a change.

Maybe you want to lose weight. Maybe you want to feel stronger, have more energy, or simply feel better in your body.

The problem is not necessarily motivation.

The problem is knowing what to do first.

Should you start walking every day?

Join a gym?

Cut carbohydrates?

Lift weights?

Hire a personal trainer?

Start tracking calories?

When there are too many options, it is easy to spend weeks researching without actually getting started.

The good news is that getting healthier does not require changing everything at once.

Start With Your Current Fitness Level, Not Where You Think You Should Be

One of the biggest mistakes people make when returning to fitness is starting with a routine designed for someone who is already exercising consistently.

If you have not worked out regularly in months or years, your starting point should reflect that.

That means considering things such as:

  • Your current strength and endurance

  • Previous injuries or limitations

  • Your exercise history

  • Your schedule

  • Your current activity level

  • Your goals

  • What you can realistically maintain

The goal of your first few weeks should not be to see how hard you can exercise.

It should be to establish a routine you can repeat.

A Better Question Than “What Workout Should I Do?”

Instead of asking, “What is the best workout?” ask:

“What can I realistically do consistently for the next three months?”

For one person, that might mean strength training twice per week.

For someone else, it might be three workouts per week with additional walking.

The right program is the one that gives you enough structure to make progress without making your life revolve around exercise.

Not sure what your starting point should be? A fitness assessment can help identify your current strength, movement, goals, and appropriate next steps before you commit to a program.

You Do Not Need to Get in Shape Before Working With a Trainer

This is something we hear frequently.

People sometimes believe they should lose some weight, improve their endurance, or “get themselves going” before working with a personal trainer.

But that reverses the process.

You do not need to prepare yourself for personal training.

A good personal training program should meet you where you are and progress as your fitness improves.

If you are currently deconditioned, have physical limitations, or simply feel uncomfortable in a traditional gym environment, those are reasons to seek more individualized guidance, not reasons to wait.

Focus on Strength, Movement and Daily Activity

For most adults, a sustainable fitness routine does not need to be complicated.

A strong starting foundation generally includes resistance training, regular movement, appropriate cardiovascular activity, adequate nutrition, recovery and sleep.

You can build from there.

What matters most initially is creating consistency.

What If Accountability Is Actually What You Need?

Sometimes people already know what to do.

They know they should exercise.

They know they should eat better.

They have probably started before.

But knowing what to do and consistently doing it are different problems.

If you repeatedly start and stop, your biggest need may not be another workout plan. It may be structure, scheduled appointments and someone helping you adjust when life interferes.

That is one of the reasons individualized training can be valuable.

Your First Goal Is Not Perfection. It Is Momentum.

You do not need to completely overhaul your life this week.

Start by establishing a realistic exercise schedule. Then build from it.

Three months from now, consistency will matter far more than whether your first week was perfect.

"I started working out with a trainer virtually a couple weeks ago & it has been awesome! Being a nurse AND being in school still, I have constantly made excuses for not having time to workout and eat healthy. At first, I started doing sessions after work when I was already worn out, but my trainer encouraged me to start waking up early and working out before I go to work. This has been a game changer for me & I no longer have excuses of not having time or being too tired because he has encouraged me to MAKE time! My trainer is so supportive & encouraging and I don’t think I would be able to get through some of the workouts if I was doing them on my own! The meal plan that was made for me was very simple and straight forward, which has made it so much easier for me to prep and to not make excuses and eat whatever is “easy” or whatever is “fast” while going to work and school. I highly recommend it here if you’re struggling to prioritize healthy habits and making excuses like I was. This is just the beginning and I can’t wait to see my progress!"-Ashley
