Personal Training vs. Group Fitness: Which Is Better After 40?

Group fitness can be a great way to exercise.

But it isn't necessarily the right solution for everyone.

As we get older, previous injuries, mobility limitations, health considerations, training experience, and individual goals can become increasingly important when deciding how to exercise.

That's where individualized personal training can offer a different experience.

Group Fitness Is Designed for the Group

In a group class, the instructor has to coach multiple people simultaneously.

There may be exercise modifications available, but the overall workout still needs to work for the class.

Personal training reverses that relationship.

The program is built around the individual.

Your trainer can consider your:

  • Current fitness level

  • Training experience

  • Goals

  • Previous injuries

  • Movement limitations

  • Progress

  • Exercise tolerance

That makes it possible to adjust the program as you change.

More Isn't Always Better

A workout doesn't have to leave you exhausted to be effective.

This becomes particularly important for adults who haven't exercised consistently or who believe soreness is the measure of whether a workout “worked.”

Progressive training means gradually challenging your body as it adapts.

Some days that means increasing resistance. Other times it may mean improving technique, range of motion, repetitions, or control.

Accountability Is Different When Someone Is Expecting You

It's easy to tell yourself you'll go to the gym tomorrow.

It's different when you have an appointment with a trainer who knows your goals and expects you to arrive.

For many of our clients, accountability is one of the most valuable parts of personal training.

They don't necessarily need someone to convince them that exercise is important.

They need help turning what they already know into something they consistently do.

Personal Training Can Be Especially Helpful for Beginners

If you've never strength trained, walking into a gym alone can be intimidating.

Individual coaching gives you an opportunity to learn proper technique, understand why you're performing particular exercises, and build confidence before progressing.

Which Is Right for You?

There isn't one answer for everyone.

If you enjoy group exercise, understand how to modify workouts appropriately, and consistently attend, group fitness may work very well for you.

If you've struggled with consistency, aren't sure what exercises you should be doing, have specific goals or limitations, or want greater accountability, individualized personal training may be worth considering.

"I started working out with a trainer virtually a couple weeks ago & it has been awesome! Being a nurse AND being in school still, I have constantly made excuses for not having time to workout and eat healthy. At first, I started doing sessions after work when I was already worn out, but my trainer encouraged me to start waking up early and working out before I go to work. This has been a game changer for me & I no longer have excuses of not having time or being too tired because he has encouraged me to MAKE time! My trainer is so supportive & encouraging and I don’t think I would be able to get through some of the workouts if I was doing them on my own! The meal plan that was made for me was very simple and straight forward, which has made it so much easier for me to prep and to not make excuses and eat whatever is “easy” or whatever is “fast” while going to work and school. I highly recommend it here if you’re struggling to prioritize healthy habits and making excuses like I was. This is just the beginning and I can’t wait to see my progress!"-Ashley
