On Saturday, August 23, Fit Therapy of Texas partnered with the Wounded Warrior Program to host a mind-body circuit training workout for veterans in San Antonio’s West Side. The event highlighted our mission to integrate fitness and mental health services, providing veterans with tools to strengthen both their bodies and minds in a supportive environment.

Access to quality fitness and mental health resources in the West Side of San Antonio is often limited. Many veterans in the area face barriers to finding a space where they feel safe, supported, and guided by knowledgeable professionals. Fit Therapy of Texas is committed to changing that. By hosting events like this, we aim to bring evidence-based wellness services directly into the community, ensuring that veterans have the opportunity to build strength physically and mentally close to home.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, “Nationally, only about 1 in 4 veterans with mental health needs are receiving treatment and locally, many don’t have easy access to high-quality, culturally informed care." Approximately 9.6% of the Bexar County population are represented by veterans in the adult civilian population and both the Wounded Warrior Project and Fit Therapy of Texas aim to help bridge the gaps between mental and physical health.

The session began with a mindfulness warm-up led by one of our licensed clinical social workers. Veterans practiced box breathing, a simple yet powerful technique to help regulate breathing and calm the nervous system. This exercise also introduced a TIPP skill (Temperature, Intense Exercise, Paced Breathing, Progressive Relaxation), a practical tool anyone can use when feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

With guidance from one of our fitness experts, participants completed a partner-based circuit workout that promoted teamwork and mutual encouragement. Each pair alternated through stations performing 8 repetitions of different movement patterns:
· Push (e.g., push-ups or bench press)
· Pull (e.g., rows or band pulls)
· Hinge (e.g., deadlifts or kettlebell swings)
· Ab/Core (e.g., planks or twists)
· Squat (e.g., air squats or goblet squats)
While one partner completed their reps, the other rested, creating a supportive rhythm that kept the energy high and the focus strong.

The session wrapped up with a cool-down led by the counselor, where participants set an intention of gratitude and finished with a progressive muscle relaxation exercise. This practice encouraged mindfulness and connection reinforcing the idea that physical recovery and mental clarity go hand in hand.

At Fit Therapy of Texas, we understand that wellness is about more than just physical strength. By combining evidence-based mental health strategies with targeted fitness training, we help veterans and the community develop tools for resilience, stress management, and overall well-being.
Events like this demonstrate that support is available locally right here on the West Side to help our veterans build healthier, stronger lives.
If you’re a veteran or know one who could benefit from fitness training, counseling, or integrated wellness programs, we’d love to connect. Together, we can continue creating safe spaces where strength and healing grow side by side.
